What is the difference between receipt, payment, journal and contra entries in accounting?

edited February 2014 in Accounting
There are 4 types:

Receipt - salary, rent income, etc...
Payment - expenses, phone bills, etc...
Journal - adjust the debits and credits of the ledger without involving cash or bank accounts
Contra - a cash traction between one cash account to another cash account
